Merit badges like Wilderness Survival, Citizenship in Society, Personal Fitness, and Personal Management provide an excellent chance for scouts to develop essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. These aren't just any ordinary skills – they're the kind of skills that will help scouts build resilience, resourcefulness, and a sense of accomplishment.Wilderness Survival, for instance, teaches scouts how to navigate through harsh outdoor conditions, find or build shelter, and stay safe in extreme conditions. This year our troop taught the wilderness survival merit badge in January. The weather mostly cooperated, but the temperatures dropped well below freezing overnight. Our boys learned that a good debris hut is warmer than a tent! The cold weather also gave them an opportunity to learn different cooking techniques and optimize their kitchen management.

Citizenship in Society is another that's perfect for winter for our troop. It's a challenging merit badge for both scouts and counselors as they explore the impact of community service on society, learn about different cultures, and develop essential communication skills. We split this up over many weeks to ensure the scouts have time to consume and work on the material as they gain a deeper understanding of their role in society and how they can make a positive difference.

Focused merit badges clinits are a great way to keep scouts moving forward. In addition, we recommend scouts work on Personal Fitness and Personal Management through the winter months. Both require long term committment and the winter months are a great time to get it done.

By earning pulling a merit badge focus into our winter schedule, it allows us to keep the scouts engaged and ensure our April court of honor has plenty to celebrate.
